Johan Tahon in Dialogue with the Mystic Lamb
Saint Bavo’s Cathedral & Saint Bavo’s House and Garden
The work of the eyes is done.
Go now and do the heart-work
on the images imprisoned within you.
- Rainer Maria Rilke
This exhibition brings together the work of contemporary sculptor Johan Tahon and his personal collection of medieval sculptures, placing them in intimate dialogue with the Mystic Lamb by Jan van Eyck — one of the most revered masterpieces in Christian art.
At the heart of this exhibition is a shared spiritual focus: the eyes — as mirrors of the soul, as pathways to the divine. Tahon’s elongated, haunting figures echo the devotional intensity of the past, while his collected medieval pieces reflect his deep reverence for the sacred tradition of Christian sculpture.
Beginning within the Saint Bavo’s Cathedral, in the presence of the Holy Lamb, and continuing through the Saint Bavo’s House and Garden, this exhibition invites visitors to reflect on rebirth, transformation, and the enduring mystery of the soul and the Self.
